I highly recommend this program to learn about SLP in an area where there arent a lot of services, and gain essential skills for graduate school. Seeing the profession at all different levels: SLP, SLPA, undergrad student's, with the professor's assistance, gave all of us a great insight of how much hard work, dedication, and willingness to exceed expectations is within each of us. Thus, following this trend, Thai occupational therapists attempt to deliver community-based services to reduce readmission rates and bridge the gap in caring for people with mental illness, including depression. I feel the growth as a professional that one can only get in unique experiences like this one. I strongly believe we grew as clinicians as we learned from each other and our clients. Therapy Abroad worked with us to create dates that matched our school schedule. My time in this program had two SLPs on-site with us, guiding us, and having fun with us. This was my first time out of the country and it was the best experience of my life! This trip was especially meaningful to me, with my favorite and most impactful part being client home visits in local villages. Ellen was there every step of the way to make sure we had everything we needed. Aside form the fun, having more hands on experience enhanced my learning more than a classroom setting could provide. This program created lifelong friends and connections within the program. The supervisors were great and Ellen was amazing. My trip with Therapy Abroad to the Dominican Republic is by far one of the best experiences of my life. I learned how to do different types of screenings, target certain aspects of speech and language through summer camp activities, as well as write case reports. This concept illustrated two categories, namely, forming a community network for depression care and coworking with an OT network. I was surrounded by positive and passionate mentors and given a leadership role to help, with a team of fellow peers, to create a week and a half long camp providing no technology resources, giving children, adolescents, and young adults with complex communication needs a voice. However, Im glad to say that any nervousness I had quickly dissipated when I met the staff and other students who were all so welcoming. During the trip to the Mayan temples, the tour guide asked our group to try termites -- so of course we did! I feel so much more prepared to be a graduate clinician because of the challenging experiences I had while in Belize. We got to go out into city, meet Belizean locals, and offer our servicesall while learning their unique stories. Furthermore, such services had weak community integration and mainly used a medical-based model in patients with a physical disability as a routine service in the hospital rather than a social model covering community-based service. I got to experience things that most studying SLPs will not get the chance to experience until Grad school. We did Tyke's Camp in Belize City and also did screenings at a school in Caye Caulker.
