Externships are clinical placements outside of Harvard Law School in which attorneys at public interest organizations, government and community agencies, and occasionally private law firms provide supervision. The course gives students the opportunity to provide legal assistance to inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lexington. Students in the public interest clinical have a variety of experiences depending on where they work. The ICTY, established by the UN Security Council in 1993, is charged with prosecuting and trying persons allegedly responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former Yugoslavia during the conflict resulting from the breakup of that country.
